It is important to be aware that no matter how far away you live from a parent or loved one, you can still be helpful. Even from a distance, you can offer assistance that will make your loved one’s life easier.
Initial preparation and evaluation
- Talk to your parent or loved one about his/her particular needs and concerns.
- On a regular basis, consult other family members or caregivers who currently assist your loved one. Ask how you can help.
- Make sure you have a good understanding of your family member’s medical diagnoses, medicines and other health issues, especially any functional deficits.
- Consult with your loved one’s primary care physician on a regular basis. Make sure any HIPAA and confidentiality consents have been signed by your loved one.
- Educate yourself about resources in your family member’s community.
- Visit as often as you can. This will offer a respite break for regular caregivers and provide you with the opportunity to evaluate your loved one’s situation and needs.
Consider what type of help your loved one needs
- Home support services?
- Assistance with daily living task?
- Medication supervision?
- Environmental changes?
- Handyman services?
- Safety issues?
- Meals and nutrition?
- Companionship and socialization?
